So your family’s having a Thanksgiving dinner and you’re wondering if gifts would be too Christmas-y. Perfect chance to show her some extra love. And we can help you pick the perfect gift for your hosts, especially if they own fitness trackers.

Smart scales

I know, I know. We don’t want to think about calories, sugar, and fat during Thanksgiving. But reality is, maintaining a healthy body weight and composition is critical for your family’s physical well-being. Smart scales allow you to measure your weight, BMI, fat mass, and sometimes even water composition depending on the model! And with wireless sync of data to web accounts or matching apps, you can set goals and see how you’re doing over time. Some of our recommendations are Withings Smart Body Analyzer, Fitbit Aria, and Garmin Index. Each scale has its pros and cons, so find the right smart scale for your beloved family member. (Learn more by reading “The Best Smart Bathroom Scales of 2017.”)

Wireless earphones

Has someone in the family been reminding you how much they love that Fitbit device you gifted them last year? Then that family member would love to hear about Fitbit Flyer. Fitbit Flyer was released alongside of Fitbit Ionic, the company’s perfect blend of smart watch and fitness tracker. The sweat-proof, wireless earphones are secure, comfortable, and supports multi-device connectivity. It has music and call controls, and you can even access voice assistants like Siri and Alexa. All this without compromising sound quality! Encourage a healthy lifestyle by gifting a Flyer this Thanksgiving.

Smart water bottle

Top 5 hydration tips for pregnant women and their babies

Top 5 hydration tips for pregnant women and their babies

Hydration is as important as a healthy diet for pregnant women and their to-be-born babies. Knowing that you should hydrate and implementing it into your daily life can be very different. So today, we would like to share with you 5 simple hydration tips for pregnant women.

Soothe your morning sickness by hydrating.

“You get used to it,” said no pregnant woman about morning sickness. That nauseous feeling, especially strong during the first trimester, is definitely not the best way to start a day. Studies show that dehydration can worsen morning sickness for to-be-mothers. If you find difficulty drinking water to ease the nauseousness, you may try adjusting the temperature to avoid the lukewarm range. You can also opt for a drink with a fresh scent, such as peppermint tea or ginger tea. This will hide the other scents that you’ve grown sensitive to due to rising levels of estrogen.

Control your coffee intake.

As we’ve explained in our previous blog “5 reasons why you should be drinking water for you and your baby”, too much caffeine is a big no-no during pregnancy. However, you don’t need to completely give up your coffee. According to WebMD, pregnant women are recommended to limit caffeine to 200mg a day, which is approximately equal to the amount in a mug of filter coffee. But remember, coffee is not the only source of caffeine. You may want to keep tabs on tea, carbonated drinks, chocolate, and more.

Keep track of how much water you are drinking.

That being said, the only way to ensure that you are drinking enough water is to keep track of how much water you are drinking. According to Nestlé Waters, waiting until you’re thirsty to drink water will not prevent you from experiencing the detrimental effects of mild dehydration. There are many ways to measure how much water you are consuming throughout the day. You can do this manually by counting glasses, but a smart water bottle can make the process much more convenient.

Consume water-rich foods to contribute to your hydration level.

I know I just said that water is the best source of hydration. But that doesn’t mean you should disregard healthy, nutritious, and hydrating fruits and vegetables like celery, watermelon, strawberries, and more! Of course, soups and stews can contribute too as long as you consider nutritional factors other than water content.

Don’t drink too much water at once.

Try to avoid becoming too ambitious and gulping down a liter of water before bed to reach your hydration goal. Not only can drinking too much water put pressure on the kidneys and cause water intoxication, but it can also cause a pregnant woman to feel uncomfortable due to bladder expansion and her growing baby.

Staying hydrated during pregnancy may be a challenge, especially with so many other things on your mind. With these 5 hydration tips in mind, you will be well on your way to hydration for you and your baby.

5 reasons why you should be drinking water for you and your baby – Hydration for pregnant women

5 reasons why you should be drinking water for you and your baby – Hydration for pregnant women

Pregnancy is a blissful and magical thing. It takes some time for pregnant women to become used to the fact that there is a little human being growing inside them. Amidst the flood of changes, you may be overlooking a key element to you and your baby’s health: hydration. Drinking plenty of water may not be as instinctive as quitting smoking and drinking. But less instinctual does not mean less important. Here are five reasons why you should be drinking water for you and your baby.

1. Water is needed to form amniotic fluid.

Amniotic fluid is an almost-clear fluid found in the amniotic sac surrounding the growing baby. The amniotic fluid has several important roles in helping the baby grow. It acts as a cushion to protect the baby from physical injury and allows the baby to move around in the uterus, aiding bone and muscle development. When the baby breathes in and swallows the amniotic fluid, it is practicing breathing while exercising its digestive system. When the amniotic fluid first forms, it is 98% water from the mother’s body. This explains why women will tend to feel thirsty in the first trimester of pregnancy. However, as signals from the body can be a bit hectic during pregnancy, it is probably a better idea to track your hydration instead of solely depending on thirst to guide your water intake habits.

2. Water supports the increase in blood plasma volume.

Pregnancy will have various effects on your including blood volume and blood components. (Read more in detail about the effects of pregnancy on the cardiovascular system.) You will see your blood plasma increase by 40 to 50 percent, while your red blood cell concentration will increase by 20 to 30 percent. This facilitates the exchange of gases and nutrients between you and your baby and minimize the impact of blood loss during delivery. The increase in plasma volume will kick in at around six weeks, so pregnant women are recommended to drink water to support this increase.

3. Water can help prevent constipation.

Research shows that three out of four women have bowel-related disorders during pregnancy, and constipation is one major culprit. The main reason behind this constipation is an increase in the hormone progesterone, which relaxes the digestive tract and other smooth muscles of your body. In addition to eating a high fiber diet and exercising routinely, increasing fluid intake can help prevent or treat constipation. Adequate hydration may also help alleviate your stress and anxiety, two other contributors to constipation.

4. Water is a good substitute to less healthier sources of hydration.

Overconsumption of drinks with high levels of caffeine or sugar are generally a bad idea during pregnancy. First of all, high blood sugar levels increase the risk of gestational diabetes, a type of diabetes that only happens during pregnancy. The condition may increase chances of certain complications including early labor and low blood sugar for the newborn baby. (Read more about gestational diabetes.) On the other hand, excessive caffeine may contribute to problems such as premature labor, miscarriage, and birth defects. So when in doubt, you should choose water over unhealthy beverages to quench your thirst. But keep in mind that this doesn’t mean you need to completely rule out other drink options. (Read about the 9 healthy juices you should drink during pregnancy.)

5. Water is necessary to rehydrate after breastfeeding.

If you are planning to breastfeed your baby, then your hydration pattern should also be adjusted after pregnancy as well. Breastmilk is 88 percent water and while drinking more water does not necessarily lead to increased breastmilk production, breastfeeding your baby may lead to secretion of about 700 mL of water daily. That being said, it’s important to continue to pay attention to your body after pregnancy for your own health. (Read about breastfeeding benefits for mother and baby.)

As you can see, there are plenty of reasons why you should be drinking water for you and your baby! Drinking water can be a difficult habit to develop but it is definitely worth the effort. The Natural Hydration Council suggests that pregnant women drink 300 mL more and lactating women drink 700 mL more than pre-pregnancy amounts. Start right now. Get a glass of water and say cheers to you and your baby’s health! Now, remember that drinking too much water at once is not too good of a choice either. Read this to find out how to stay hydrated all day long.

Three Reasons You Should Use Ozmo with Garmin

Three Reasons You Should Use Ozmo with Garmin

Ever since dinosaurs roamed the earth…

Ozmo has offered synchronization services with fitness trackers. Okay, so maybe that’s an exaggeration. However, it is true that one of the most attractive benefits that Ozmo smart water bottles offers is its ability to share data with other health platforms. Then what’s so different about the new Ozmo Hydration Widget on the Garmin Connect IQ Store?

What is the Garmin Connect IQ Store?

First things first, what is the Garmin Connect IQ Store? If you own a Garmin device, then you probably already know all about Connect IQ. Simply put, the Garmin CIQ is a platform which allows third-party developers to offer Garmin users to download apps and widgets to personalize their Garmin devices to fit their desires and needs. Ozmo has developed a special widget for Connect IQ to further enhance its Smart Hydration Platform.

The Three Big Benefits

1. Get your personalized hydration goal and track your progress.

If you are already using Ozmo Water App, then you are already enjoying this benefit! However, connecting your Garmin device can personalize your hydration goal EVEN MORE! When you first start using the Ozmo Water App, you’re asked to enter your approximate weekly activity level. The number of active minutes is one of the factors Ozmo uses when calculating your unique hydration goal. The instant sync of data via the CIQ Ozmo Widget will enable automatic adjustments of your hydration goal according to your latest workout data. How amazing is that?

2. Real time update on your daily and weekly hydration progress

Using the Ozmo Hydration Widget means that you can easily access your hydration data on your Garmin device. Right on the interface of your device, you can see the key metrics of your hydration status: your daily hydration goal and your water consumption so far. There is no more need to pull out your phone whenever you want to remind yourself how many more glasses until you hit your goal. Checking in on your hydration is now as easy as telling time. This way, you’ll be ever so more motivated!

3. Manually log in water consumption if you don’t have Ozmo bottle

Let’s admit it. Regardless of how much you love your water bottle, you won’t always have it by your side. There’s no need to panic if you accidentally leave your beloved smart bottle at home. You can easily log your water consumption manually from your Garmin device. So next time you’re served water in the meeting room or restaurant, remember to log that extra cup with your Garmin device because drinking from other containers is not against the rules. What matters most is that you stay hydrated!

Ozmo Hydration Widget is readily available for your download on the Garmin Connect IQ Store! Click here to check out the widget and revolutionize your hydration habits.

5 Coffee Aficionados You MUST Follow on Instagram

Coffee is a beautiful thing to smell, taste, and see. Yes, see! There’s even a famous saying that goes: “The beauty of coffee is in the eyes of the beholder.” Okay, so maybe I’ve kind of tweaked that one. Still, it’s true that coffee can be appreciated as an art, and I don’t mean just latte art. Keep scrolling to see how Instagrammers blend coffee with art.

Some coffee take-out cups are a bit on the bland and empty side. Take Starbucks cups for example (sorry!). Although its simplistic design with a green logo has become famous enough to recognize from across the street, it has a lot of white space.

Josh Hara of @yoyoha saw the blank side of his Starbucks coffee cups as a potential canvas. When he thought of a clever coffee-related cartoon, he drew it on a coffee cup. Ever since, he has been amusing his audience with ingenious and humorous works.

How to live healthy: A day with a nutritionist

How to live healthy: A day with a nutritionist

We all want a healthy lifestyle, but sometimes we get stuck because we don’t know where to start. Well, who would do healthy better than a nutritionist? Meet Chelsea, a registered dietitian and Ozmo’s own in-house nutritionist. Chelsea’s super easy tricks throughout the day will give you a kickstart on a healthy, hydrated you. Pick up these daily habits and you will be as healthy as a nutritionist pretty soon.

7:00AM – Wake Up and Drink Water

Drink water first thing in the morning from your Ozmo Active to kickstart your day

I begin my day by drinking a cup of room-temperature water. Drinking water first thing in the morning gives my metabolism a little boost. It also helps get my brain get ready for whatever the day may hold.

TIP: Keep a glass of water somewhere near your bed. You’ll thank yourself in the morning.

8:00AM – Brew Some Coffee

Muesli with fresh fruits and nuts and a cup of coffee for breakfast

Did you know that your coffee can contribute to your hydration? But try not to exceed the recommended caffeine limit of 400 mg/day (or 4 cups of coffee). Caffeine is a diuretic, which means that overconsumption may cause dehydration. If you need a little pick-me-up in the morning, go for it. I start my day with a cup and a healthy breakfast and usually stick to about 2 cups of coffee per day.

Recommended menu: Muesli with fresh fruits and nuts YUMM!

10:00AM – (Don’t) Have Some Morning Snacks

Drinking water in the office to ward off mindless snacking in the morning

Some people think nutritionists don’t have snacks, but who can blame me, or anyone? I’m no critic of early morning snacks, but they’re not a daily habit for me. Usually, I reach for a water bottle and drink some water first to check that I’m not mistaking thirst for hunger. After twenty minutes, if I’m still hungry, I go for a small snack. Read on if you want to know what a nutritionist’s idea of a healthy snack is.

12:30PM – Lunch Time

Reach 50 percent of hydration goal by noon. Check your progress with Ozmo Water App.

Because I usually trade in morning munchies for some water and I like to grab lunch at half past 12. As soon as I sit down for my meal, I sip on a tall glass of water. Mealtime is always a good time to remind myself of my hydration needs. Besides, it’s been proven that reaching half of your daily hydration goal by lunchtime increases the chance of you reaching that goal.

3:30PM – Snack Time

Hummus and water-filled veggies for afternoon snack

3:30pm should be National Snack Time. I love to munch on water-filled veggies with a lean protein to stay hydrated AND full!

Some of my other healthy favorite snacks are:

  • A piece of fruit with sunflower seed butter
  • Lettuce roll ups with a few slices of turkey or cheese
  • Air popped popcorn with raisins and pumpkin seeds
  • Hummus and veggies (like above!)

5:00PM – Workout Time

Workout gear: running shoes, dumbbells, apple, favorite music track, Ozmo Active smart water bottle

Everyone has a favorite workout. Mine is dance cardio. Exercise only increases the importance of hydration, especially with the rising temperature. I make sure to drink water before, throughout, and after my workout. The key is to pace yourself both for the workout and for the hydration. Plus, studies show that hydration boosts exercise performance.

6:30PM – Dinner Time

chicken salad with mixed greens, tomatoes, zucchinis, carrots, bell peppers, and other vegetables

Oh, wouldn’t it be amusing to tell you Nutritionist Chelsea goes through the fast food driveway on her way home. But I don’t. I like to plan my meals so that at least half of my dinner plate is full of vegetables. I don’t survive purely on greens, but vegetables are important to my diet. They are full of vitamins and minerals and their water composition contributes to my hydration quota for the day!

Recommended menu: Grilled chicken with mixed greens and other veggies

9:00PM – Tea Time

A cup of herbal tea before bed for some relaxation

Do you have a case of the munchies while relaxing in the evening? So do I… but I stop them in their tracks with a cup of herbal tea or hot water with lemon. Not only does this count towards my hydration goal, but it helps me unwind before bed too!

So we’ve taken a look at Chelsea’s day. What daily habits help you stay healthy?

Should corporate’s make it compulsory to Hydrate?

Should corporates make it compulsory to Hydrate?

The modern lifestyle and health

In our modern urban lifestyle, we have learned to embrace stress. Every day we wake up early in the morning, hurry into our commute, and start our repetitive work routines. In the midst of the bustle, chances are we can’t really fit anything too healthy into our meals. And with summer approaching, the importance of water and hydration only multiplies. Many urbanites struggle to find a balance between work and life and don’t pay as much attention to their health as they should. This brings the question: should adequate nutrition and hydration be compulsory at work?

By implementing a guideline on healthy nutrition and hydration, companies will not only do their employees a huge favor. On top of that, they will set an example in improving the urban lifestyle as a whole. Here are some main points on why a company should set guidelines on nutrition and hydration in the workplace:

  • Poor health affects workplace efficiency

In many hustling-bustling metropolises like New York and Hong Kong, employees are often left with little time to focus on eating healthily. Many workers grab he quickest fast-food combo and only drink coffee or soft drinks. More often than not, these workers lose efficiency at work since such lifestyle will degrade their ability to focus. Not to mention that deteriorating health – combined with a high stress level – can result in higher rates of sick leaves. If companies could introduce measures to track hydration, set water-drinking reminders, and implement healthier eating habits, they could be solving the problem right at the core. It also helps employees who want to look their best in the summer season.

  • Employee benefits and positive corporate culture

In today’s workforce, salary packages are no longer the sole criterion when employees are searching for new jobs. Instead, employees look for companies with better nonmonetary benefits and working culture. A health and hydration guideline will create buzz in the job market. You company will enjoy a reputation as an organization that cares. This will attract top talents as well as CSR-conscious customers.

What can companies promote and how can they implement it

When implementing this idea, the last thing you want is to be perceived as a nanny-company. Strictly enforcing a health and hydration guideline could easily backfire. Companies should provide incentives instead, such as providing discounts to healthy food, giving out smart water bottles and smart hydration apps to employees, starting health-related interest groups, or introducing boot camps and yoga classes. Instead of enforcing a rigid standard, companies can promote a healthy lifestyle that can bring hydration, nutrition, and activeness into the workplace.

Happier employees, happier employers

At the end of the day, we spend 8 hours day (if not more) in the office. Our moods directly affect those around us, including coworkers. So, having happier employees will make the whole office vibe healthier and happier. With a more motivated workforce, there isn’t much doubt that employers will be happier too.

Hydration for Your Summer Body

Hydration for Your Summer Body

As temperatures rise, staying hydrated is of the utmost importance, not just for your health, but for your summer body too! Since your body is over 60% water, it shouldn’t be a surprise that you need to raise your water glass frequently throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Adequate hydration is essential to maintain proper bodily functions including digestion, muscle contraction, and transportation of nutrients throughout your body. One of the most important roles of proper hydration is maintaining appropriate body temperature, which is especially important in the hot summer months! But did you know that staying hydrated can also help you lose a few lbs too?

We want you to feel proud of your summer body, so here are 4 ways adequate hydration can help you feel your best this summer.

1. Adequate hydration raises your metabolism.

Studies frequently show that staying hydrated can help raise your metabolism, which aids weight loss and may be the missing factor you need to drop those last few pesky lbs! In fact, one study showed that drinking an extra 500ml of water can boost your metabolism by a whopping 30%! Here are a few tips on how to stay hydrated throughout the day.

2. Adequate hydration prevents mindless snacking.

One of the most common mistakes I see clients make when trying to lose weight is mistaking thirst for hunger. Next time you feel tempted to reach for a snack, try drinking a glass of water first to take the edge off your hunger. If you are still truly hungry, eat a healthy snack with lean protein and fiber, but don’t be surprised to find that more often than not you were just thirsty!

3. Adequate hydration may reduce bloating.

There’s nothing worse than feeling bloated on the beach, and staying hydrated can help you de-bloat by flushing out waste and preventing constipation. A general healthy diet should be high in fiber and sipping a sufficient amount of water helps reduce bowel transit time by binding to fiber in your colon to increase the bulk of your stool. This makes elimination easier, reducing bloating, gas and uncomfortable stomach pain. If you’re inadequately hydrated, your body reabsorbs water from your colon, increasing the likelihood of constipation.

4. Adequate hydration fights cravings.

The next time you’re craving something sweet, eat your water! Refreshing water-filled fruit like watermelon or strawberries will help you champion over that sweet craving and help you stay hydrated at the same time. In addition to mistaking thirst as hunger, inadequate hydration can increase cravings for sweets, which can thwart weight loss success. Fill up on water-filled foods like vegetables and fruit, along with a glass of water, to help fight cravings!

How are you staying hydrated this summer?

Five Hacks to a Healthy Body

Five Hacks to a Healthy Body

When people think of the word “health”, the first thing that comes to mind is exercise. However, you can’t exercise your way to health without making the right lifestyle choices. So here are five habits that you should adopt if you haven’t already.

Hack #1 – Hydrate your body

You may have heard this hack one too many times, but it’s that important. Hydration is vital for your health for many reasons, but this doesn’t mean that you need to chug gallons of water on an hourly basis. There are alternative ways to get hydrated from a variety of drinks to simple hydrating snacks. If you are active and sweat a lot, remember to replenish electrolytes by incorporating the right sports drinks. A good level of hydration will rein in raving appetites in addition to aiding basic bodily functions. If you need help keeping yourself hydrated, our Ozmo smart water bottle and water tracking app may be for you.

Hack #2 – Get your rest

Sleep often gets pushed down your priority list behind work, social activities, and exercise. However, our bodies cannot work without proper rest. Pay more attention to the amount and quality of sleep you are getting, and try not to compromise the rest you deserve. First, find a way to better balance your work and your life. If you’re having trouble falling asleep, follow these easy tips for better sleep every night. Your body will thank you, and you’ll feel much more revitalized and energetic.

Hack #3 – Stop counting calories

We know that calories jump out at you from those nutrition labels, but there is more to healthful foods than just low calories. After all, we are what we eat, right? The foods that we choose to feed to our bodies with influences our bodily functions in so many ways. The quality of food is important to you and your health, so stop counting calories and look at the ingredients, sugars and fat content, and how your food is cooked. Read about how you can start eating healthier with these three ways to replace your unhealthy habits.

Hack #4 – Remember: nobody’s perfect

There is nothing more discouraging than failing to keep your vow to never touch anything with sugar again. One of the biggest mistake made when trying to “go healthy” is setting unrealistic goals and making dramatic changes to your daily routines. Your brain is afraid of changes, so go for small steps towards a healthier diet and lifestyle. Instead of switching eating habits and exercise routines to whatever is hot on the Internet, try to find a lifestyle that best fits you. Most importantly, remember that no one is perfect, so don’t let that late-night snack haunt you in your nightmares. Just keep on walking towards your goal.

Hack #5 – We’re all in this together

Do you ever feel like your motivation level drops dramatically a couple of days after you have made the decision to lead a healthier lifestyle? You’re not the only one. Try finding friends who have similar goals with you. By adding a social element, the transition to a healthy lifestyle will be much smoother. If you can engage in healthy activities with a friend, you’ll find it easier to look forward to that workout and to say no to unhealthy food choices. You don’t have to pull through all by yourself. We’re all in this together.
